Breast Lift (mastopexy)

Breast Surgery:

Mastopexy operations are designed to remodel and lift the breast. They correct loss of support caused by pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. They can also de used to improve asymmetry. The operations involve reshaping the skin envelope and sometimes the breast tissue itself. Unfortunately this cannot be done without some external scarring. Scars vary from a circular scar around the areola for a minor lift, to an areolar scar plus an inverted "T" shaped scar running down the lower part of the breast and along the fold underneath.

The operation is a daycare procedure usually done under general anaesthetic. Discomfort is usually moderate and improves over 48 hours. Incisions are mainly healed in two weeks. Most day to day activities can be resumed in two to three days. Heavy lifting and exercise resume in one month.

What are the most common risks?

Infections can occur with any operation. Bacteria can be present on the skin and within the breast tissue. Usually infections can be treated with antibiotics without lasting effects.

Scars are to be expected with these operations. In most patients they fade over one to two years, but are never totally invisible. The most important factor in scarring is genetic makeup and this may cause widening and thickening of scars in some people.

Asymmetry of the breasts is normal in nature. After mastopexy surgery there will always be some minor asymmetry as it is impossible to perfectly match volume, shape and skin tone.

Delayed wound healing and altered nipple sensation may rarely occur.
